There are a few ways to “sync” models and files for BIM360.
These can be put into three groups.
1. Models meant for Collaboration - Revit Worksharing
- If your project/files need to be used for collaboration, open that file within Revit and use the Collaborate tab to collaborate into the cloud.
- If you are using a Central File on a server and want to switch to BIM360, open the latest version of the Central File and detach from Central, then collaborate it into the cloud.
- Have the users access the central file from the cloud copy now.
- You will then see the folders/files appear on the initial splash screen (in Revit 2019/20/21).
- You can also see if it’s a cloud-based file by the small icon in the bottom left corner of its preview icon.
2. Models/files for Storage
- If you want to store files that don’t need to be collaborated on (perhaps just .dwg references), you can upload them straight onto the Hub (https://b2.autodesk.com/) or through the Desktop Connector (desktop-connector - BIM 360 (autodesk.com)).
- Note that if these are Revit files, you won’t be able to open them through Revit "B" option under the startup screen as they won’t appear as an option. You will only be able to see them when linking them in.
- As you can see in the screenshot below, you can’t see certain folders within Revit, however, you can in the Desktop Connector.
- Desktop Connector shows all versions/files, whereas Revit will only see versions of Revit that are the same, and files that are collaborative.
- Non-workshared models can also be saved from Revit into Docs using the option to save as "Cloud Model" - About Cloud Models for Revit | Revit Products 2019 | Autodesk Knowledge Network
3. Models/Files for Linking
- Again, you can upload directly through the Hub or through the Desktop Connector.
- Users must navigate through the Desktop Connector path in order to be able to see files hosted in BIM360 Docs.
- Users must navigate through the Desktop Connector path in order to be able to see files hosted in BIM360 Docs.
- You will then use the “External Resources” button to “link” or “reload" links that were originally cloud-workshared files, that were collaborated to the Hub.
