Tip Title:      You Can No Longer select underlaid elements or pinned elements or linked elements, or some combination of these.

Issue:

When selecting elements in Revit using the modify cursor occasionally you may find that you can no longer select certain element types. Namely elements that are part of an underlaid view in a plan view, or elements that have been pinned, or elements that are in a linked file.

Solution:

this is due to the selection modes currently running. Under the modify cursor icon on The Ribbon Toolbar there is a drop down menu called Select when you pop open this menu you will see that you can select which elements you would like to be selectable by ticking the box next to each element type you can turn off or turn on the ability to select these element:

These selection modes are repeated in a series of small icons in the lower right corner of the drawing window:

When a selection mode is inactive the icon will have a small Red Cross in its corner:

To restore the ability to select elements as required simply make sure there is no Red Cross on that particular selection mode or that the checkbox in the select drop-down menu next to that selection mode is ticked.
