Tip Title:      Project Debugging – Can’t Open Files

Product:      Revit

Author:        Chad Smith – Consulting Technical Lead

The Revit project file will not open.

Not all corruptions are element specific, as sometimes they can happen at a more general level in the project file and the file may not be able to be opened.

1.      Firstly, try using the Audit option in the Open dialogue when opening the file.

2.      Sometimes, the issue isn’t even found in the file you are trying to open. If you are having issues opening a file with links (DWG & RVT), you might find that the issue is in one of the links instead.
To test this, if the project file is found on a server, try copying it to a local drive, leaving the linked files on the server, and then disconnect the network. This will disconnect the project file from the linked files, and it might now open. Then try reloading the linked files one at a time until you find out which is the culprit.

3.      Lack of memory might be another issue, especially if you have numerous linked files.

Additional information

There is one very specific error that can pop up, and is worth noting.

“An attempt was made to access 'file name'.rvt past its end”

This error means that the file hasn’t completely saved, and there is a 99% chance that the file cannot be recovered. It’s usually best to cut your losses and restore from a backup and redo the work, rather than waiting for a Support call back telling you it can’t be recovered.

There is one thing that can be taken away from this error if it keeps reoccurring. Since this is a saving issue, which means a save has been interrupted and typically over a network, it could mean that there is an issue with the network which needs to be addressed.
